Earth walk, a parade which took place in streets of Colombo, Sri Lanka with the participation of 300 young nature lovers. This was the first ever earth walk in the island of Sri Lanka. the event was organized by the National Road to Rio campaign organizing committee with help of Colombo operated model united nations, the national youth services council and the academy of design.
The Earth walk was started from the Police Park Grounds in Thimbirigasyaya at 9 AM. The participants were on parade passing the University Colombo through the Cambridge place to Viharamahadevi Park in Colombo 7. The young crowd was very enthusiastic about protecting the environment. They were carrying many slogans and educating the bystanders about the earth’s climate, some of them have echoed their voice for the environment through the loudspeakers.
The awareness program was participated by many leading youth organizations in the island all of them were on a common target. It is very commendable the great task done by the organizers to make one voice behalf of the nature with participation of many organizations. Same times it gives the youth some moral shift towards protecting our environment. The parade was ended with a fashion show and concert in the open theater.
Workshop on Earth day
A work shop with title “Using Digital Media for Sustainability” was held to commemorate the World Earth Day on 22nd April 2012. The work shop was held at Royal College Colombo7, Sri Lanka. Earth day was declared in 1970 as the wake of increasing man made nature destruction. Particularly Nature lovers gather on this day and urge the governments and authorities to take actions to minimize the environment destruction in countries around the world. Awareness programs and workshops are organized to educate the people on environment and its value to the world.
The workshop was organized with participation of United Nations Information Center, Ministry of Environment, British council, EDEX, Think green, MIGA. A documentary Film “One Day on Earth “was screened at the event. The secretary to the Environment Ministry B.M.U.D Basnayake addressing the gathering said that policy on environment is being drafted by the ministry of environment and will be presented to the RIO + 20 conferences.
The walk was organized ahead of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio and the conference will be held in June 2012. A youth organization known as National Road to Rio +20 Campaign (NRRC) was started with the aim of speaking at the conference. The conference will be focusing on the climate change and sustainable development and it will be participated by world leaders around the world. The National Road to Rio +20 Campaign works closely with other leading youth organizations in Sri Lanka. They actively engage in protecting the nature, conduct various campaigns and ask the government to do more to protect the nature. Earth walk is one step of the organization to grab the attention of Sri Lanka to make people green conscious. The parade was able to achieve their target by talking the attention of the crowd and even some passer by joined the walk.
